This collection of short stories owes much to fairy tales – sometimes obviously, but other times a little less so.
Some of my favorites include “The Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn”, which has a rather amusing twist on the typical unicorn tale, “Cruel Sisters”, a slightly different take on a folk song, and “Utensile Strength”, which happens to take place in the world of Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles, and features the Frying Pan of Doom. I mean, how can you not love a story that features the Frying Pan of Doom?
Many of these have been published in short story anthologies, but I’d managed to not run into any of them before, so if you like Patricia Wrede, it’s a book worth seeking out.
This is one of my favorite collection of short stories. So many lovely stories–very different from each other, but I love them all. Particularly the Frying Pan of Doom!
